Cloudy Water

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Dirty filters

  • Excessive oils or organic matter

  • Improper sanitizing

  • Suspended particles or organic matter

  • Overused or old water

SOLUTIONS:

  • Clean filters with an appropriate filter cleaner.

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer.

  • Add sanitizer as needed.

  • Adjust pH and/or alkalinity to the recommended range using suitable pH/alkalinity regulators.

  • Run the jet pump(s) and clean filters again with a filter cleaner.

  • Drain, clean, and refill the spa.

Water Odor

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Excessive organics in water

  • Improper sanitization

  • Low pH

SOLUTIONS:

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer.

  • Add sanitizer to maintain proper levels.

  • Adjust pH with a pH increaser to the recommended range.

  • Drain, clean, and refill the spa.

Chlorine Odor

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • High chloramine levels

  • Low pH

SOLUTIONS:

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer.

  • Adjust pH with a pH increaser to the recommended range.

Musty Odor

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Bacteria or algae growth

SOLUTIONS:

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer.

  • If the problem is visible or persistent, drain, clean, and refill the spa.

Organic Buildup/Scum Ring Around Spa

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Buildup of oils and dirt

SOLUTIONS:

  • Wipe off scum with a clean rag.

  • If severe, drain the spa, use a spa surface protectant after cleaning to guard the shell, and refill the spa.

Algae Growth

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • High pH

  • Low sanitizer level

SOLUTIONS:

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer.

  • Adjust pH with a pH decreaser to the recommended range.

  • Shock the spa again with sanitizer and maintain proper sanitizer levels.

Eye Irritation

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Low pH

  • Low sanitizer level

SOLUTIONS:

  • Adjust pH with a pH increaser.

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer and maintain sanitizer levels.

Skin Irritation/Rash

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Unsanitary water

  • Free chlorine level above 5 ppm

SOLUTIONS:

  • Shock the spa with sanitizer and maintain sanitizer levels.

  • Ensure free chlorine levels drop below 5 ppm before using the spa.

Stains

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • Low total alkalinity and/or pH

  • High iron or copper in source water

SOLUTIONS:

  • Adjust total alkalinity and/or pH with a pH increaser.

  • Use a metal inhibitor product to prevent metal buildup.

Scale

PROBABLE CAUSE:

  • High total alkalinity and/or pH

  • High calcium content in water

SOLUTIONS:

  • Adjust total alkalinity and pH with a pH decreaser.

  • If scale needs removal, drain the spa, scrub off the scale, clean the shell with a spa surface cleaner, and refill the spa.

  • Add a stain and scale inhibitor and balance water using pH regulators as needed.
